Mathura is one among the seven holy cities considered by Hindus. It is the birth place of Lord Krishna and hence called Braj-Bhoomi. There are many places of historic and religious importance in Mathura. It is located 50kms north of Agra city. Originally the place was called Madhuvan as it was thickly wooded. The local people of Mathura speak Hindi in a different dialect which is called Brajbhasha.

The twin city of Mathura is Vrindavan which is located 11kms away. It was the home of Lord Krishna when he was young. Here there are several temples belonging to various sects of Hinduism. In these temples we find Lord Krishna in His various forms and Avatars. Millions of devotees visit Vrindavan every year to participate in festivals related to Lord Krishna.
