Kausani is located at a height of 1890 mts and is125 kms away from Nainital. The place is natural and scenic. Kausani is known for the view of the world’s best sunrise and people from all over the world come here to see this majestic sunrise. A clear view of the snow covered Trisul and Nanda Devi can be seen from here. In fact you get a 320 kms wide view of the Himalayan ranges. Kausani is nestled among thick and dense pine forests. Mahatma Gandhi came here in 1929 and stayed here for 12 days. He was very impressed with the beauty of this place and called it as the “Switzerland of India”. Gandhiji spent some days in an ashram out here called as the Anashakti Ashram. Even today people come to this ashram when they visit Kausani. You can visit Kausani anytime of the year. In the summers it is pleasant and green and sometimes during winters it is covered with snow.

The market of Kausani is very small; few shops are available in the market. You can only buy some limited daily need items from these shops. You can buy beautiful shawls from the Shawl Factory. There are a couple of medical stores where you can get basic medicines.

There are numerous hotels from budget to 3 star categories in Kausani. Apart from normal hotels this place also has lots of cottages. All the hotels and cottages face the Himalayas and one can see the beautiful sunrise and the Himalayan ranges from the rooms. Kausani is famous for its tea gardens. The tea produced here is of export quality and rich in flavor. There is a tea factory where tourists go to see how tea leaves are processed and they take away some packets of tea with them.

The famous Baijnath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located 20 kms from Kausani. This road also connects Kumaon region to Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. These two roads meet at Karanprayag which is located on the Badrinath route. Every year thousands of tourists come to Kausani, Nainital, Ranikhet and other famous tourist places located in the Kumaon region after completing their Chardham Yatra.
