Katra is a small town located at the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains. The holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is located in Katra. There are several hotels, restaurants, dhabhas and guest houses here. The main bazaar has many shops selling dry-fruits, woollen clothes, leather jackets, etc… Tourism is the main source of occupation as millions of devotees visit the Shrine every year.
You have to trek for 14kms from Katra to reach the Vaishno Devi temple area. It is dedicated to Shakti or Durga ji. The devotees have to register themselves before starting the trek. The way to the temple is steep and ponies and palkhis are available for those who do not wish to trek. Another alternative is to take the helicopter ride from Sanjichhat. The temple is located at a height of 6200 feet. There is a facility to stay in the rooms provided by the Trust near the temple.
During summers the temperature reaches up to around forty degrees. In winters the temperature can go below four degrees and most often it snows
