Dehradun is the state capital of Uttarakhand. It is surrounded by the Himalayas in the north, the Shivalik hills in the south, the Ganges in the east and the Yamuna river in the west. Dehradun was a developed city from the beginning and it has developed further after it became the state capital. The city was always famous for educational centres and world-renowned schools but nowadays it has also become the centre of state politics and all kinds of commercial trades like Information Technology, Real Estate and manufacturing units. The city consists of the four major roads, Rajpur road, Chakrata road, Saharanpur and Haridwar road.

Dehradun is an important defence centre. The famous Indian Military Academy (IMA) recruits and gives training to the cadets and turns out some of the best officers for the Indian Military. It has an Ordinance factory and some units of DRDO. The city also has important institutions like the Indian Institute of Petroleum, ONGC, FRI, Survey of India, Wildlife Institute of India and many other renowned institutes.

Dehradun is the getaway to the two the most beautiful hill stations of Mussoorie and Chakrata and the pilgrimage to the first dham of Chardham Yatra “Yamunotri”. The city has an old world charm about it. The British influence of the 1900’s is clearly evident in the city’s old educational institutions that they had set up like the Doon school and St.Joseph’s Academy. You can also find a confluence of cultures as people from many Indian states are residing here from many years. There is also a sizeable population of Nepalis and Tibetians who had come here in exile in the year 1982. English is popularly spoken locally owing to the abundance of good English schools since decades.

The market of Dehradun is well developed. It has showrooms of all the major brands and large Malls. The local people are fashion conscious and they keep abreast of all the latest trends in fashion. The famous street of Paltan Bazar, Indra Market is full of medium types of branded and non-branded stores of clothes, shoes and electronics. People come here to buy bargained items from the stores as well as from the street vendors. Most of the renowned international branded stores, restaurants and food chains like Mcdonalds, KFC, etc are located on Rajpur road.

Dehradun is also famous for world-renowned schools. The city has a number of day schools as well as boarding schools. Students from India and abroad come here to get admission in these schools. Many of these children belong to industrial families, politicians and bureaucrats. The famous Doon School which has an international identity is located here.

The city has numerous hotels from a budget category to a 5-star category. These hotels are located all around the city. Some budgeted hotels are located near the railway station on Tyagi road and some luxurious hotels are located on Rajpur road.

Dehradun is well connected by road, rail and air. All types of buses like State Govt Buses, Private buses and Luxury Volvo buses operate from Delhi to Dehradun. Jolly Grand Airport of Dehradun is 30 km / 45 mins drive from the city centre. It connects Dehradun to all parts of the country. Air India, Jet Airways and Spice Jet operate daily flights to Delhi which connects to the other parts of the country. Dehradun is well connected by many trains as well. These trains originate and terminate at Dehradun.
